Adventure Wedding Shoes and Boots

A question we often get asked is:

What type of shoes are most appropriate to wear to an Adventure Wedding Day?

Our Answer: Large Waterproof Boots AND Hiking Boots AND Comfy Pair or Pretty Heels.

Yes, I said 3 pairs!  It’s been our experience throughout these 5+ amazing years of planning adventure weddings in Iceland, Patagonia and beyond that packing all of them allows your day to be comfortable no matter if it rains or is blue skies all day.

You might start with the hiking boots for the ceremony, transition to the tall waterproof gum/rain boots for some waterfall hiking fun and then end the night in your comfy Toms or fabulous girly stilettos.  Believe me, it’s nice to have options available throughout the day (along with extra socks for you and your groom).

We also suggest this same rule of thumb to your Adventure Wedding guests as well.  It’s good to clue them in that waterproof hiking boots are best because it is likely they will be walking on uneven terrain, lava rocks, moss, or muddy trails for 10 minutes up to 120 minutes one way, depending on your fabulous Adventure Wedding Schedule.  Regular tennis/running shoes are not going to be durable enough to last and keep people comfortable through the entire day.

Your next question is probably where do you buy the best Adventure Wedding Shoes and Boots for brides, grooms, and guests?  Don’t worry, I will share my favorite list:

Merrell

REI

Sorel

Hunter

Joules

DSW

Badgley Mischka

Zappos

Heels

Toms

Adventure Wedding What to Where

Tips for getting the most out of your Adventure Wedding Shoes / Boots:

  1. If you do not usually wear heels and want to for your wedding day, start ASAP.  Start out wearing them while doing household chores (1-2 hours a day) and build up until you can stand an entire day.  I know this may sound silly, but the more time your toes and the balls of your feet have to get a little callused, the longer you’ll be able to stand, walk, and run around in those fancy stilettos with no complaints (Serious advice from a 15+ year stiletto veteran- believe me it works!).
  2. Invest $13 USD to purchase a pair of Heel Savers by Solemates you’ll be glad you did later!
  3. If you are worried about your shoes slipping there are shoe grips you can purchase that go on the bottom of your shoes and also inside to add comfort and prevent slippage.
  4.  Do your research before buying!  Many shoe sites now have shoe reviews which you may find helpful before buying online.  If also buying online make sure you check out Retail Me Not for a possible coupon code!  That site rocks.
  5. Remember to take your Adventure Wedding Shoes or Boots to your dress fittings to ensure a perfect bottom hem (and bring your other shoes if you’re considering a change at your reception to gauge length difference).
  6. Wrangle your fiancé into dancing with you on a hardwood floor to give your destination wedding shoes a test run.  Make sure you can move, spin, be dipped and regain your balance in them easily.
  7. Lay your shoes out the night before your wedding (together with any other accessories too) so your awesome Adventure Wedding Photographer, can snap some super sweet detail shots.
  8. Clean your shoes once you get back from your Adventurous Destination Wedding.  I know my heels were stained with mud by the end of our Adventure Wedding ceremony.  It took me a bucket of water, Simple Green, Dove soap, and 40 minutes to restore them back to their original glam status but I am so glad I did!
  9. Wear them again, again, and again they’ll make you smile and transform you back to your newly wedded bliss =)

Patagonia Wedding Photos-Mount Fitz Roy-Los Glaciares National Park-Your Adventure Wedding

Los Glaciares Park Argentina | Patagonia Wedding Photographer

I found myself intoxicated by Los Glaciares National Park, long before I spent time exploring it.  There is just something so curious about those granite Fitz Roy towers emerging into the air, the way the light falls on them, and the sharp textures of the Perito Moreno Glacier!

The Los Glaciares National Park can be found on the Argentinean side of Patagonia.  It is one of the largest national parks in the country spanning over 2,800 square miles.  It’s not a park you can easily sightsee through in one day.  …and please don’t!  Spend the time to savor it through a few days!  After all, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site so it’s gotta be good, right?!

Mount Fitz Roy and Laguna Torre Los Glaciares National Park Patagonia Argentina Wedding

Dying to know how to get here?  The nearest international airports to get to these fabulous areas are as follows:

  • Rio Gallegos, Argentina (RGL) which is approximately 155 miles to the start of the Los Glaciares National Park in the larger known city, El Calafate.
  • Punta Arenas, Chile (PUQ) which is approximately 300 miles to El Calafate.

El Calafate is a fantastic vibing town, one of my favorites in fact!  The people, the food, and the fact that it is a pretty central locale to discover all there is in the Los Glaciares National Park, helps too.  Minutes from here, you’ll find yourself among the glory of the Perito Moreno Glacier!Patagonia Wedding Photographer-Los Glaciares National Park-Your Adventure Wedding-1

The options for discovering the Perito Moreno Glacier are many!  First, there is an 1 hour boat ride that gets you super close to to admire the glacier falls at eye level.  Then if you’re an extreme sports enthusiast or adrenaline junkie, there are guided tours you can take hiking or ice climbing on the Perito Moreno Glacier.  And for those of you that wish to admire from afar or at a birds eye view, then you’ll love the boardwalk that allows you to walk from end to end.

Patagonia Wedding Photos-Mount Fitz Roy-Los Glaciares National Park-Your Adventure Wedding

Three hours north of El Calafate, past Lago Argentino and Lago Viedma, but still within the Los Glaciares National Park you’ll find the grand Fitz Roy Mountains.  The towers of Mount Fitz Roy are nestled in the small town of El Chalten, which I like to refer to in its current day situation of being a “pop-up-town” because everything in this town looks less than 1-5 years old (as of when this Patagonia Wedding Planning post was published).

It’s so new that at the time we visited, the entire town shared one internet connection… I’m not kidding.  For the 4 days we spent here exploring I could barely get any emails sent and even had to reschedule Skype calls because there was not a strong enough connection available.  The gas station was not even a stationary place (it was a trailer).  But the fabulous trade off, is that you’re able to stay so close to the beauty and peace that lies within those majestic mountains behind that little town!

El Chalten is a mecca for those who are looking to hold a romantic elopement or adventure wedding in the Argentinean side of Patagonia.  There are 30 minute hikes to 4 hour hikes that will forever imprint you soul.  What an unforgettable way to not only celebrate your wedding in Patagonia but to continue on with your honeymoon throughout the stunning Los Glaciares National Park!

The Los Glaciares National Park and the Fitz Roy Mountains in El Chaltén, present some unique challenges as far as routes, fuel options, internet speed, etc.  But the views you’ll encounter are out of this world amazing so please find your way there!

We’d love to help you plan your epic Patagonia adventure wedding, so please contact us for more information to ensure your Argentina destination wedding or elopement in Los Glaciares National Park or at the Fitz Roy Mountains will be a flawless time!  In the meantime, today we share with you a few of our favorites from a Los Glaciares elopement! ❤ Enjoy ❤

Nordic and Patagonia Wedding Planner and Photographer: 2015 Year in Review

21 countries, 10 states, and 6 islands were conquered this year.

…and today I write you from the “bottom of the world” in Ushuaia, Argentina.  Did you know it is the furthest most Southern city in the world.  I find it slightly ironic since my business first started at the token “top of the world” in the Nordic countries.  It seems only fitting I begin my best year yet here at the bottom!

As many of my weekly followers know, 2015 was a big year of changes for me personally and also professionally.  But taking a big bird’s eye view back over the last several years (and maybe you will to?), I sit for a moment, smile and am reminded at how different each year has been for me as well.  Different in gratitude, grace, in mission, and adventure.  I am addicted to it, crave it, live it daily, and breathe adventure every day in my life and in my career.  When those two things aligned, my life changed to purely positive.  I learned how to love, live in the moment, embrace my passions, found where there is a will there is always a way, and a renewed respect and admiration for people and cultures, I frankly didn’t know was possible.

I committed to myself after my divorce was finalized in January 2015, I very would very bravely pack up everything I own, put it in a storage unit, and leave the USA to travel for a year in order to bring my Adventure Wedding concept to life.  I did and I have absolutely no regrets (even after flipping a car in Galloway, Ireland) as I come to the close of 2015.  The things I have seen, tasted, and experienced, I could write for years on (and I will, so please follow Your Adventure Wedding).  The new offbeat locations I have brought into my destination wedding planning repertoire are unbelievable!  Did you see my travel schedule I posted?  That was just a simple taste as to what I have planned… if you know me, you know I get down and offbeat, not mainstream tourism!  My travels continue on into 2016 and I will continue to live out of only 3 suitcases and a purse =)  It’s a lifestyle I have come to love and embrace whole heartedly with all my being.

Follow me on Instagram to see daily updates and/or inspiration!

Additionally, I am incredibly thankful to the couples who trusted me in 2015 to plan and forever document their Iceland weddings and elopements (and locations beyond), it was so amazing to be a part of history with you!  No one can rock out rainy, snowy, and cloudy weddings with a smile, like you!  I have the best most hardcore clients ever, THANK YOU for being so badass!  …and to my fabulous couples upcoming in 2016 and 2017, you have challenged me and more importantly, trusted me to step it up a notch and plan some indescribably unique things in some incredible places, I heart you!!  THANK YOU and I look forward to making it the best year yet!!

To my amazing partners all over the world… Without you I wouldn’t be able to rock out adventure weddings in some of the most obscure locations people told me weren’t possible!  Thank you for supporting and running with me in my crazy awesome visions!  I’m really excited to having you as part as our “A-Team” of vendors as we change the way the world views destination weddings!

So, I left you a little teaser from last week’s Christmas Eve post about some big news, right?!  In an effort to continue our mission of leading the change in the destination wedding industry to equal Adventure Weddings… I’m happy to announce that we have officially opened up our South American market!  If you’re an outdoorsy couple who loves to hike, be in the middle of epic landscape scenes, and be completely awed by nature then allow me to introduce you to the underrated: Patagonia.

….wondering where it is?

Patagonia sits within the Andes mountain range in Southern sections of Chile and Argentina.  This is also where the mysterious and most intriguing “W” trek of mountains live and breathe.  There are volcanoes, lakes, rain-forests, glaciers, fjords, caves, penguins, bird watching, endless mountain views, and so many unique experiences to be had, you will not be able to sit patiently still!  We would love to chat more with you about this location being your unforgettable destination wedding location, please contact us for more information and if you’re up to the challenge of being the first!

Every year, must conclude with reliving some lovely moments in time, right?  Today, I’d like to share with you a few of our favorites from the 2015 Iceland wedding year (Note: We do not post the majority of our Iceland weddings or destination weddings on this blog because we respect the privacy of our high profile clients) but some of our clients love and allow us to share them with you, so let’s look back and delight in those today along with a few of my favorite travel photos!

Enjoy!  …and cheers (Skal!) to you and yours as we head into 2016 being our best year yet!
