I found myself intoxicated by Los Glaciares National Park, long before I spent time exploring it. There is just something so curious about those granite Fitz Roy towers emerging into the air, the way the light falls on them, and the sharp textures of the Perito Moreno Glacier!
The Los Glaciares National Park can be found on the Argentinean side of Patagonia. It is one of the largest national parks in the country spanning over 2,800 square miles. It’s not a park you can easily sightsee through in one day. …and please don’t! Spend the time to savor it through a few days! After all, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site so it’s gotta be good, right?!
Dying to know how to get here? The nearest international airports to get to these fabulous areas are as follows:
El Calafate is a fantastic vibing town, one of my favorites in fact! The people, the food, and the fact that it is a pretty central locale to discover all there is in the Los Glaciares National Park, helps too. Minutes from here, you’ll find yourself among the glory of the Perito Moreno Glacier!
The options for discovering the Perito Moreno Glacier are many! First, there is an 1 hour boat ride that gets you super close to to admire the glacier falls at eye level. Then if you’re an extreme sports enthusiast or adrenaline junkie, there are guided tours you can take hiking or ice climbing on the Perito Moreno Glacier. And for those of you that wish to admire from afar or at a birds eye view, then you’ll love the boardwalk that allows you to walk from end to end.
Three hours north of El Calafate, past Lago Argentino and Lago Viedma, but still within the Los Glaciares National Park you’ll find the grand Fitz Roy Mountains. The towers of Mount Fitz Roy are nestled in the small town of El Chalten, which I like to refer to in its current day situation of being a “pop-up-town” because everything in this town looks less than 1-5 years old (as of when this Patagonia Wedding Planning post was published).
It’s so new that at the time we visited, the entire town shared one internet connection… I’m not kidding. For the 4 days we spent here exploring I could barely get any emails sent and even had to reschedule Skype calls because there was not a strong enough connection available. The gas station was not even a stationary place (it was a trailer). But the fabulous trade off, is that you’re able to stay so close to the beauty and peace that lies within those majestic mountains behind that little town!
El Chalten is a mecca for those who are looking to hold a romantic elopement or adventure wedding in the Argentinean side of Patagonia. There are 30 minute hikes to 4 hour hikes that will forever imprint you soul. What an unforgettable way to not only celebrate your wedding in Patagonia but to continue on with your honeymoon throughout the stunning Los Glaciares National Park!
The Los Glaciares National Park and the Fitz Roy Mountains in El Chaltén, present some unique challenges as far as routes, fuel options, internet speed, etc. But the views you’ll encounter are out of this world amazing so please find your way there!
